Apologies for there being no April Wallpaper but I hope this image makes up for it. Anyone who knows me will know I love butterflies. Recently I saw an Orange Tip fluttering in the fresh green grass and this is the basis of this months image. Watch this space for more butterfly prints I am working on....

At the moment the fields of Suffolk are abundant with hare's, and I remebered the fabulous book The Butterfly ball and the Grasshopper’s Feast, from 1973. Illustrated by Alan Aldridge and with verses by William Plomer. This months wallpaper image colour references Alan Aldridge's Harlequin Hare.

Naturally being February I looked to Valentines for my inspiration this month. I was admiring many historical Valentine card designs, many were pretty pale lacey designs and others were surprisingly bold and colourful. I have tried to keep it romantic, retaining some floral elements and then add a spark of love and passion.

Just in case you are curious, below is the image we created for ColeySmith Consulting.
We had quite a challenging brief from The Penelopes. They were obsessed with animals and surrealism, but they also wanted it colourful and upbeat. However animals in surreal situations, with human-like attributes can quickly descend into the macabre.
One illustrator, Malika Favre, stood out as being able to achieve their vision; by 'visually translating their collective subconscious' - sexy, edgy and quirky. This was coupled with a logo based on the the font 'Dear John' which complimented her graphic style.

We recently visited the fantastic Gerhard Richter exhibition at Tate Modern This month's wallpaper is clearly inspired by Richter. The image was created entirely in Photoshop using a photograph I took of some peeling paint on a pillar in Ipswich. I did not want it to be a Richter copy, but I did want to capture his skill at layering and blurring digitally. It is testament to his skill as a painter that this was actually very difficult to do. I am pleased with the results of this homage to a great artist. I hope you enjoy it and if you have the opportunity to go to the exhibition you won't be disappointed.

Glitch Fashion II by Daniel Koh
Endeavouring to capture the essence of Joy Division and New Order, both Peter Saville and I agreed that typography could be the link. We agreed that the Helvetica Heavy Italic from Technique, conveyed the 'look' of New Order, however Joy Division was predominantly uppercase. By merging the two, a TOTAL was created.
The design is a 'nod' to Run2's commercial packaging; while the out-of-register CMYK references the perils of clients printing without proofs, which now-a-days happens all too frequently…
I initially positioned TOTAL as large as it would fit on the cover, only for the band to say it had too much white space.
For me, the 'O' was the sexiest letter, the overlapping letterforms created a further Technique / Run 2 memory and funnily enough was the only letter to appear in New Order, Joy Division and TOTAL. So I decided that to reduce the white space, I would zoom into the kaleidoscopic 'O' and wrap the rest around.
Clients are always requesting 'make it larger', so here was an opportunity not to be missed. I love the irony that the final design is massive and out-of-register... yet beautiful.

We recently worked with Peter Crawley to design his new identity and instantly developed a mutual admiration of each others work. We were delighted when Peter Crawley expressed an interest in our Cityscape Series and agreed to interpret LA as a stitched piece. The results were way beyond our expectations. The piece is hand stitched on 420gsm white watercolour paper | Coloured cotton thread | 700 x 420mm
